Anonymous asked: i love your work but as a black person you should be the last to derive images from racist caricatures. :-/ I mean, it looks nice but I just don't like the charcoal black and round, white clown-ish lips. sorry, hun.
It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t suit your fancy. I on the other hand like what I’ve drawn (and that’s all that really matters). I chose the design because personally I find it appealing, maybe not the old renditions, but it seemed to work for this piece. I’m well aware of what it resembles but don’t be so defensive. Artists, like most people, have different points of view and your not necessarily gonna agree with their opinion. If anything try to have an open mindset…

People are calling it racist? Haha, maybe THEY’RE the irrational racists.
I really admire you Devon, not just for being a great artist but for being incredibly mature & sensible for your age. (A lot more than most of these people on Tumblr…)

Drawing POC (esp. Blacks) is, sadly, touchy territory. How do you decide when a caricature becomes a stereotype? Until the minstrels and Mammies of old are a distant memory, people will always have their qualms. I happen to like your stylization.

I love your art, the designs, especially the way you use colour and shape. Your actually one of my favourite artists. But I never thought that this was a representation of a black person… I thought, yes! De’Von’s posted more art! Good work!

There are two black dudes that use minstrel performances to educate people about the stereotyping of black people in media today. This anonymous person is ignorant.

:0 well not entirely anon. his style and use of materials seems to fit into the black and white contexts. it just sort of flows? the image isnt exactly racially charged either.

I think it’s odd for a grey anonymous head to tell you how to should feel about your own race. Although the condescending “hun” at the end would just make me bristle as a reflex.

drawstubbs I couldn’t have said it better myself. anon need to have a open mind is all. an artist draws for themselves not for others.
